03-Mar-2005 -- Well, I was on my way home and realized that I would be passing within a few kilometres of this Confluence. With nothing but bush and a few mud huts around (remember, I am in Africa) I didn't know if this would be possible without a long walk. Since I was in a bit of a hurry I decided that if I could find a trail taking me in - I'd attempt it. If no trail, then I would have to wait for another opportunity.
When I was perpendicular to the site there was a track going off to my left side, just what I needed. As I drove the track it kept splitting, but always had a split heading in the direction that I wanted to go. Finally I arrived at someone's hut with my GPS telling me that the point that I wanted was in his field. Approaching, I called out, but no one answered. As I walked carefully through the field, I kept my eyes on the ground for snakes and on the GPS, looking for some zeroes. On a small walking trail I stopped. I DID IT!
I took the 4 compass pictures and one of the GPS for proof at 17S 37E.
As I continue to travel in this country and others close by I will keep hunting for numbers on a map. I have already programmed them as waypoints into my GPS so that I won't forget to stop by. This next Sunday, March 6th, I might get to 17S 36E. Till then.
