#1: View of the confluence looking north

(visited by Rod Kevill and Sandra Kevill)

26-Mar-2005 -- This was Day 2 (Saturday) of our Easter weekend trip to attempt 4 confluences along 24 South latitude, working westwards from 118°E through to 115°E. The party consisted of my wife Sandy and I, and my brother John.

I had telephoned Mt Augustus station earlier in the week to request permission to use the station tracks (Dooley Downs was now part of Mt Augustus) and talked to Don who suggested some tracks heading north-west from the Dooley Downs outcamp. We followed the track to Shannon Well, but were only able to drive in to about 3.9km from the confluence point. The temperature was around 39°C, and it was a long, hard walk in over very rough stony ground. John decided to wait for Sandy and I at a shady point about 1.8km from the confluence. At first we thought that the confluence was near the top of the Godfrey Ranges, but thankfully it turned out to be quite low down on the flanks. Even the kangaroos we came across couldn't be bothered bounding away (see photo). We took the standard photos (the south view shows Mt Augustus, the world's largest "rock", away in the distance on the horizon), then followed the GPS track to meet up again with John and continue back to the vehicle.

We were all glad to finally bathe in the air conditioning as we made our way back along the track, then on to Mt Augustus resort where we stayed the night. We met Don and his wife Dot, and son Matthew the next morning at their Mt Augustus homestead adjacent to the resort.
