05-Apr-2018 -- I had already visited this point 5 years ago, but - finding myself in Whakatane once again - decided to revisit it, to get a ‘drone’s eye view’ of the point.
As in my previous visit, I used a narrow doubletrack farm road to climb (zigzag) up the hill to within about 150 m south of the point. From there, I hiked along a forested ridgeline, and then descended a few meters down a steep hillside, on which the Degree Confluence Point lies. The Ohnesorges in 2012 apparently took the same route (as did I during my previous visit in 2013). However, the two previous visitors apparently failed to find this farm road, as they ‘bushwhacked’ their way up the steep hillside. Because the farm road is hard to find, I recorded its coordinates for the benefit of future visitors. So, future visitors, please note: Start your hike at the farm road that begins at 38.00023°S 176.99416°E. If you don’t, you will certainly regret it!
Unfortunately, the ‘north, east, south, west’ views from the point are rather boring, as the point lies in thick forest. So I also recorded views from my drone, as it flew about 100 m above the forest.
Here is a remote-controlled aerial video of this confluence point.
