04-Jul-2019 -- This is a Degree Confluence Point that has been teasing me for several years. I’ve driven past it probably dozens of times while driving on Interstate 80 between the San Francisco Bay Area and Reno, Nevada. And about 13 years ago I actually made a ’successful’ visit, but not a particularly satisfying one, as I got only 95m from the point. I knew that the point lies on a piece of private property, but I wasn’t sure which one, and I wasn’t sure how best to make a return visit to try to get closer.
But today, during the July 4th holiday (when there were likely to be fewer people around), I decided to revisit this point. From satellite imagery, I figured that an approach from the West would be best. I ended up parking at [39.00051,-121.00232], on the verge of Meadow Gate Road, next to the junction with Barrister Drive. This was just 0.13 miles from the point. From there, I walked partway up a long asphalted driveway, then through pine trees into a section of Manzanita scrub. The point lay within this Manzanita scrub, with (unfortunately) lots of poison oak growing among it. It took a long time for me to get ‘all zeros’, and in doing so, I exposed myself to a lot of poison oak. Afterwards, I had to smother my arms and legs with Tecnu lotion to clean off the irritating oil from the poison oak.
Here is a remote-controlled aerial video of this confluence point.
