(visited by Gerrit Visser and Evan Visser)

22-Mar-2003 -- On Saturday the 22nd March myself, Gerrit Visser and my son Evan, headed off in search of confluence points and other adventures in the vast expanse of the Northern Cape and the Great Karoo. The first confluence point that we headed for was en route from Johannesburg to Kimberley (382 km from home). It looked like and turned out to be an easy point to do. A short dirt road off the N12 national road led us to within 380 meters of the confluence point. While it appeared that this point was on private property, it was not obvious where the landowner lived and we saw no signs indicating that "trespassers will be prosecuted". There was also no one around to ask.

We parked near an old Railway station and climbed over an unused farm gate and headed off to find the point. After recording the North view, East view and South view, we went to explore the old building near the station. We saw what appeared to be the old stationmaster's house in ruins. We were lucky enough to see one of the few goods trains to come past while looking around.

From here we headed off to the town of Kimberley where we camped at the Kimberley Pleasure Resort. The following day we visited the Big Hole at Kimberley and the Museum. This was a worthwhile visit to see the largest hole in the world dug by hand. What man will do for diamonds?
