19-Aug-2004 -- I travelled by car along the eastern lakeside of the Kallsjön, turned right at Kallsedet and north after the bridge in Ytteräng, crossing the rapids of the river Ängsan. From now on I followed the gravel road north for almost 34 km. I left my car near the latitude 64°N beside a small bridge over the river Tväran, changed clothes and packed my bag with necessary things for the following 4 km walk through mountain forest.
The day before was a beautiful warm summer day in this area. The morning of the 19th started cloudy but with some spots of sunshine, pretending another sunny day. On my way north to 64°N 13°E the clouds increased, and when I started my hike at 11:45 the sky was almost overcast.
For the first part I went upstream along the bank of the small river Tväran, then I turned northeast to catch the latitude 64°N. The track led me through the virgin forest of the Flesans reserve. Sections with overgrown boulders alternate with wide-stretched fens. In the rocky area you have to watch every step not to fall into on of the many overgrown holes. With all its snaggy and mossy trees the forest sometimes spread a spooky atmosphere.
At an altitude of 600 m the forest passes into moor with dwarf-shrubs and rocks and eases the advancement – only a cold comfort, because a few hundred meters before I reached my aim it slightly started to rain.
The CP (750 m above sea level) is situated in a boggy dip, and I was lucky to find the zeros just outside a small pond. After taking the photos at 14:00, I took shelter behind a mighty rock near the CP for a lunch break, waiting for better weather. The surrounding blueberry fields were not harvested yet and sweetened the waiting.
After half an hour all of a sudden the wind increased and stormy flurries brought heavy rain showers. So I started my way back to the car at 14:45, even more carefully cause of the slippery rocks and always watchful, not been carried away by the flurries.
I reached the car at 16:45, and there was one word to describe the situation – wet!
The next confluence stop should be at 65°N 14°E in Norway, hopefully the weather will be a little better then.
Notice:
Beneath the GPS-navigator and the Flällkartan Z4 (scale 1 : 100.000), another helpful equipment assured the successful hunt: A pair of good wellingtons, bought in 1999 for about 9,- Euro in the A-Z market of my hometown Senden ( … a little allusion to the problems of Henrik Sunden, he described in his confluence report from 63°N 13°E).
