14-Oct-2006 -- In October 2006 I was on the last existing British Royal Mailship, the RMS St. Helena. This ship is the only regular connection to the island of Saint Helena, which was my destination.

I had boarded the ship on Ascension Island as a passenger and with a look at the chart on the bridge of the ship I saw that there might be a chance to touch a degree confluence at 12°S and 10°W.

When the ship reached the area on 14 October around midday, I closely watched my GPS and had my camera ready. Going at around 15 knots, I was not able to catch the precise moment which was less than 0.1 minutes off in both directions. The photo shows a position shortly after the closest point.

So in the middle of the South Atlantic, the luck was with me, the main difficulty was to explain to fellow passengers what I was doing when I steered at my GPS for an hour or so without accepting to be distracted.
