20-Apr-2013 -- The adventure began with the decision to find this confluence. Knowing this area well we knew this would be a real challenge especially with our limited time frame and exacerbated by tracks that had not been used for many years. We are very experienced bushmen and extremely 4w/d competent.
We left after work from Karratha (N/W Western Aust.) for our staging point - Caliwinga Springs - some 250 km. The last 50 km was real outback country which necessitated night driving. Upon arrival a quick tea and to bed ready for the final assault.
Expecting the worst we set off to find to our amazement that all our selected routes had been bull dozed due to exploration drilling, requiring us to simply meander by vehicle down to the nearest point to our confluence and walk the last 2.5 km (Burke & Wills, eat your heart out).
As we now had plenty of time we upped the challenge and came home via a magical typical Pilbara route encompassing 4w/driving, magnificent scenery, and bush loneliness.
To meet the challenge and win is great, but what it is really all about for us is simply to be in the real bush with a mate, enjoy the bush cooking, and be awed by the magnificence of the Pilbara night, something money just cannot buy and we cannot get enough of.
