19-Jun-2006 -- After successfully visiting three other confluences on the trip (see S27 E146) Melanie and I decided to visit one final confluence before returning to the UK. The S26 E149 confluence seemed convenient since we were going from Roma to Carnarvon Gorge, and the confluence is almost on the way there. We scouted the location on maps and satellite images, and found that there might be an unsealed track that might make it possible to drive almost right up to the confluence.
We started out heading north from Roma on the Carnarvon Developmental Road, turning off onto the Taroom Road and following it all the way to Durham Downs. After having been traveling further west in Queensland the scenery seemed quite different, with lots of high grasses covering the ground everywhere and big tall gum forests.
After getting to Durham Downs we pleasantly found that Origin Energy had sealed the road north all the way to their new Spring Downs site, which meant easy driving for another 8km or so when we got to a floodway over a dry creek. The sealed road continues NW here, but the confluence is to the west so we turned off on the unsealed track we had seen on maps.
The track twisted and turned its way over rolling hills on its way to the confluence. After driving for a further 4km on the track we came to another dry creek. The track deteriorated badly through the creek so I left Melanie with the car and continued on foot for the last km.
I reached the confluence at 1pm, in the middle of a large field by a small bush. On the way there I heard some birds, but didn't see any other animals around, and hadn't for quite some time.
