22-Nov-2014 -- This is the 8th out of 8 reports, describing confluence visits in South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho. The previous report is 29°S 27°E. The story starts at 26°S 29°E.
Our one week vacation in southern Africa came to an end. We would fly back to Europe in the evening. After our early morning visit of 29°S 27°E, we continued driving northwards, heading to Johannesburg. On our route, a visit of this Confluence was not much of a deviation. From Winburg, we took the little county road R73, which follows the main railroad line between Bloemfontain and Johannesburg. There is the train station of the village Whites in 1.7 km distance, such that this Confluence would be conveniently visitable by public transportation.
We parked our rental car in 190 m distance right at the road. From there, a short walk between two almost barren agricultural fields took us to the exact location of the Confluence. A closer look showed that the earth is not barren, but full of tiny little sprouts of this year’s crop. I was not able to determine what kind of crop the Confluence would wear this year. It was not necessary to step into the crop to reach the exact location of the Confluence, because the point is between two fields (1 m into the southern field).
The area around the Confluence is flat with an open sky. The most distinctive feature seen from the Confluence is a couple silos.
We continued our drive northwards heading to Johannesburg. After a lunch break in the beautiful town Parys, we reached Johannesburg airport at 5 PM and caught our flight back to Switzerland two hours later.
