(visited by Mike Bonnici and Etienne Vassallo)

30-Nov-2005 -- After learning about the Degree Confluence Project and working in remote areas of the Sahara Desert I became interested in visiting the confluence points in the vicinity of our seismic programs in Libya. Our company has been operating in North African Libyan Sahara desert for a number of years and one of our main roles is to establish GPS control networks for seismic purposes. Locating these confluence points came as second nature!

At present the crew (NAGECO Crew 201) is located close to the edge of the Great Sand Seas and it was decided to visit the first nearest confluence point to our base camp location. The trip was conducted on the 30 November by traveling a distance of approximately 50 km from base camp to reach the confluence point.

A visit to the crew by a town based administrator was the perfect opportunity to scout and locate a confluence point while giving the town based personnel a feeling of desert driving and habitat. Three men were involved, Muṣṭafā FexFex as the driver, Etienne Vassallo and Mike Bonnici to navigate to the confluence point at 28 N 22 E on the morning of 30 November 2005.

The terrain is made up of a very flat sand gravel plain with hardly any landmarks. Once the site was located, it was marked by aluminum tags for future identification purposes and visits. Photos were taken showing the landscape at the four quadrants.
