17-May-2001 -- A friend of ours told us about this project when he learned we
would be traveling in this part of Texas. We traveled through
Marfa, Texas and found Hwy 169. We easily found the Perdiz ranch,
but the target area was posted. We took pictures and had just
about decided to turn back, when a car approached. We explained
what we were doing, and they graciously invited us in. The
husband explained that he was familiar with the spot, because
some ham radio operators had done a special broadcast from there
several years ago. He further explained that he had since sold
the land, but told us how to contact the new owner.
We contacted the new owner. He was a bit bewildered, but had
no problem with us visiting the site, as long as we closed all
the gates behind us. We traveled over rough dirt roads, and through
a small creek crossing, through a herd of cattle, and to the
barbed-wire fence that marked the end of the road. This site is
in the Chihuahua Desert, and there is very little vegetation.
It is truly the middle of NOWHERE. We took our pictures,
commented on how close we were to Mexico, and started the trek
back to civilization, making sure we closed the gates behind us.
