14-Jun-2023 -- It was an easy drive south from Omaha and 41°N 96°W to reach this confluence, with a final approach from the east. At 2:45pm I parked at a pull-off just to the west, entered an ungated field of shin-high corn, and zeroed out five feet into the adjacent field of thigh-high prairie grass along a former barbed wire fence line. The house to the east was not visible through the trees, but there was an expansive view to the southwest. Partly cloudy with a temperature of 86°F, little wind, the melody of two or three birds. I spent five minutes at the confluence and was back to my rental pickup just before 3:00pm.
Heading west I discovered the bridge to Du Bois was under construction, necessitating extra travel along fresh gravel roads en route to 40°N 97°W. Flat tire (rock puncture) at 3:30pm. No lugnut key. Tow truck arrived at 7:30pm. Lots of time for contemplation. Thankful for the help of two friendly farmers and the guest room of a friend’s parents in Lincoln NE at 9:00pm. Expect the unexpected, and remember that life is good.
