03-Sep-2013 -- A few years earlier, I had tried to visit this confluence point from the west (from US-101), but was thwarted by gates leading to private Simpson Timber Company land. Yesterday evening, I tried approaching from the south-southwest, but was thwarted again - this time by a maze of private residential roads. Today, I finally succeeded using a different approach - from the south-southeast.

From Eureka/Arcata, I drove eastward along highway 299, until I got to latitude 123.967W. At this point I turned onto a paved road - Blue Lake Boulevard - that runs parallel to the highway, and eventually turns into a narrow gravel logging road that meanders northward, alongside "Tip Top Ridge". I didn't see any "private" or "no trespassing" signs on this logging road, so I think it was legal to drive. If you take this road, however, be warned that it is quite narrow, and is a working logging road; as I drove along it, I encountered several large logging trucks.

After driving along this logging road for about 10 miles, I found myself at 41 degrees North, but a couple of miles to the East of the confluence point, so I took several turnoffs onto more (even narrower) gravel logging roads that took me closer to the point. After a lot of backtracking, I was eventually able to find a logging road that passed just 400 feet West of the confluence point.

The confluence point lies on a hillside, in an area of forest that had been logged a few years earlier. (Several large tree stumps were nearby.)
