20-Aug-2001 -- This was my fourth stop on a 7-day, 3200km confluence hunting trip to the BC interior,
covering
51N121W,
52N121W,
52N122W,
52N123W,
52N125W,
52N124W,
54N124W,
54N125W, and
53N123W.
After "recharging the batteries" (mine, as well as those of the GPS, cell phone, and camcorder) with my stay
in a motel in Williams Lake, I left the intersection of Highway 97 and Highway 20 at 11AM, heading west on
Highway 20. After crossing the Fraser River, the highway travels across a plateau, which contains the Williams
Lake Loran C tower, as well as views to the mountains in the distance. At 12:20PM I pulled into the Hanceville
rest area to look at the view.
I then went back a few hundred feet and went north on a "dirt" road, which after 7km came to a stop sign
at the intersection with another gravel road. The "dirt" road was in places quite muddy and rutted, and without
a high-clearance 4WD vehicle, I would suggest not using this route if it has been wet. At the intersection I
turned left(west), and travelled a little ways down the road, parking where 123W crossed.
I started walking north to the confluence, reaching it in about 10 minutes - nice to start the day with another
success! I took some pictures and video and headed back to the car. While at the car, a truck pulling a trailer
carrying a backhoe stopped to see if I was having car trouble. I explained a bit about the project, and found out
from the driver that the road I was on did continue to Alexis Creek, and also that had I continued on
past the confluence to the creek, and gone a ways upstream, there are the remains of an old homestead.
I decided to go back the way I came in, knowing the road and that it wasn't far to the highway, which I
reached at 2:38PM.
On to 52N125W.
