31-Jan-2021 -- I’m a little late to the game submitting a record of this site visit as it happened almost a full year ago, but here is my account on visiting 54N, 91W.

While conducting stick nest surveys (corvids and raptors) along the proposed Wataynikaneyap transmission line on January 31, 2021 I had the opportunity to travel via helicopter up to Bearskin Lake Indian Reserve. The airstrip of which is only 3 km from this confluence. It took little persuasion on my part to convince the pilot to touch down on the frozen lake surface and allow me to hike over to the confluence coordinates. To get to the confluence coordinates I was using my trusty handheld Garmin eTrex 20 which generally has an accuracy of ± 5 meters.

The lake measuring approximately 2 km long by 0.7 km wide is one of thousands in the area surrounded by spruce and birch forests typical of northern Ontario. During my visit the temperatures were relatively mild at –10 °C, with nearly no wind and overcast conditions. Through our surveys we noted raven nests nearer to the Bearskin Lake Indian Reserve, though not much else in terms of wildlife given which was expected given the season.

Although this is the first report submitted to the Degree Confluence Project, I do not believe that I am the first to have visited it as it lies not more than 200 m from a snowmobile track that originated from the Bearskin Lake Indian Reserve.
