10-Jul-2008 -- This confluence is located on Prince of Wales Island in southeast Alaska, one of the largest islands in the United States. Much of the island has been heavily logged since the late 1950's, but the area immediatedly around this confluence has not been disturbed and is in many ways an intact old-growth ecosystem. The charismatic mega-fauna of the island are Black Bears, Alexander Archepeligo Wolves, and Sitka Blacktail Deer.

The first attempt to reach this confluence in 2007 by bushwhacking about 3.5 miles from a logging road failed due to lack of time.

In 2008 we canoed to within about .75 mile of the confluence, then camped and hiked to the confluence site the following day. The hike was through a beautiful old-growth Red Cedar/Sitka Spruce/Western Hemlock forest with lots of deer and bear sign along the way.

The confluence was in a scrub Yellow Cedar/Western Hemlock muskeg wetland with a pond nearby. The pond was very beautiful. We observed one Sitka Blacktail deer and sign of geese in the vicinity. We did not observe any wolf sign. The weather was cool, around 50 degrees F., as it has been all summer.
