19-Jun-2004 -- We started our trip from Reykjavik on the 19th of June and drove 460 km north to Mývatn, where we had arranged our base camp. We arrived there at 18:00 and after a short meeting we decided to waste no time and proceed towards the confluence. The weather was excellent, sunny and absolutely no wind.
We left the base camp at 18:30 and drove towards road 867 (Öxafjarðarheiði). After 136 km we came to the track that leads south from road 867 to the confluence. We were lucky because it has not rained there for several days so the track was mostly dry. After driving this track for 12 km we had to stop because of broken bridge on the track, and there was no way driving around it. From this spot there was only 7.64 km to the confluence. So there was only one option left, that is to walk and we both got 2 legs and we are not afraid to use them (see 64N18W).
It took us 1.5 hours walking over wet moor, heath and tussock land to reach the confluence. On the way back to our car we noticed another track that is not on the map we had, that would have taken us about 3 km nearer the confluence than the track we took. It was too late, but we will remember it the next time we come here. We found our car where we had left it at 00:30 and the sun was just setting down. We were back on road 867 about 01:00 and after short late night dinner there we drove south to our base camp at Mývatn. We were sleepy but happy when we reached the base camp at 03:30 in the morning. Another confluence mission accomplished.
