05-Jan-2005 -- This is the last in a series of six confluence visits/attempts during a trip to Thailand in December 2004/January 2005 (Start).
Our time in Thailand came to an end and we were on our way to Udon Thani to return the car and then catch a flight to Bangkok. With a couple of hours to spare and just 55km south of Udon Thani we decided to give this confluence a shot. It should be an easy one.
It actually turned out to be as easy as I had thought it would be. This part of Thailand is very flat and pretty much completely cultivated. So even though our map showed the big 4 lane highway #2 from Bangkok to Nong Kai and the border with Laos as the closest road (~10km west of the confluence), I was confident that we would have no trouble finding roads and tracks that would get us much closer.
We left the big highway for road #2025 and let the GPS guide us. The satellite picture
shows the resulting track and also gives an idea on how much farming is going on in this area. When we got to within 350m of the confluence it just didn’t make sense any more to drive slowly around the fields, so we parked and walked straight for the spot.
Like so often it turned out that we could have actually driven to the confluence since it’s located right on one of the tracks. The confluence lies in the middle of sugarcane fields close to a resting hut used by farmers to take breaks during the hottest part of the day. Some of the fields still had the sugarcane standing, others were just harvested and some had already been burned. We took our pictures and went on to Udon Thani to conclude this trip.
