01-May-2005 -- The following day, after two successful visits of 26N 32E and 25N 32E, we were in Aswān viewing the small dam with 24N 33E less than 15 km away and feeling very confident of getting a third. We had used the company letter to avoid us being herded into a convoy of tourist busses that have been standard since the troubles in the 1990's and I had digitized a road leading out of Aswān that branched south and passed within 1 km of the Confluence. We crossed back over the dam and turned right and this lead us to a railway crossing with an option of staying this side of the railway, or crossing and climbing a hill into a town come building site. We elected to stay this side of the railway line as the heading appeared correct.

A kilometer or two later it was looping back to the south and it was clear it was going to loop to the high dam, so we backtracked and crossed the railway line. At this stage I had my mistake of digitizing a railway line as a road, which we had to cross on our attempt on 26N 32E and started to doubt the existence of the road. We stopped to ask and were told this other road only went into this town that was on top of the hill. I persevered anyway and climbed the hill to check it out. The road went past some buildings but seemed to end at the far side. We tried the next road along and it seemed to do the same. We were getting short of time and believing I had made a mistake with the railway line, we gave up.

Later when I got back, I compared my track log to the digitized road and we were correct at the top of the hill, we should have pressed on through the building site! On the way north we tried to access some wādiys that may give access east to 24N 34E, but the one we picked petered out and we could get no further. While reversing to turn around I high centered on some rocks. Before getting out to check the situation, I looked in my rear view mirror to see rock carvings behind! I have no idea of their origin, or whether they are of any importance. They looked recent but this was well off the beaten track and this whole area is teeming with history.
