At 11:00 hrs on 21 April 2005 I visited the small museum at al-Sulṭān where the remains of the 'Marble Arch' are laid. It is sited near a cross-roads some 15 km northeast of confluence 31N 17E. Anyone with the time should find it possible to get within a kilometre or so of that target on good roads.

It can be reached within the hour from Sirte (Surt). It is also less than 2 hrs drive from the populated oil-camps at Ra's Lānūf where the Marble Arch was initially erected to mark the spot reached by the Philaeni brothers in a contest to settle the boundary between Tripolitania and Cyrenaica c. 400 BC.

The friendly museum guard posed for a photograph whilst 10 White Storks soared overhead, Bee-eaters called and Spanish Sparrows tended their nests. A spring outing to suit all tastes!
