06-Apr-2005 -- Having left Ġadāmis (30°08'N 9°30'E) at 9:30 on 6 April to cross the desert by Toyota Landcruiser to Sardalīs (25°47'N 10°33'E), we reached our first night's camp in the Ḥammādat Tingarat (28°36'N 10°33'E) at 19:00. At 16:50 I had logged our position (by a telecommunications mast) as 29°07'11"N 10°08'05"E. This proved to be the closest point we were to Confluence 29N 10E, viz. some 19 km NE.

It would have been possible to travel on a southerly track closer to the Algerian border, but we had been cautioned to give that area a wide berth because of current tensions.

The attached photos were taken to the North and Southeast of the Confluence as we dropped from a stony plateau down to flat sandy ground and then sabkha.
