(visited by Bill Quigley)

24-May-2005 -- The drive to this confluence from my hometown, Corner Brook is over 700 kilometres to the eastern most extremities of Newfoundland and North America. It just so happened that during the "May 24th. Weekend", we were visiting relatives in St. John's, and I thought a visit to the nearest confluence of N47 W53 could be a possibility.

On Tuesday, May 24/05, with a few hours to kill, I took Highway 10 south from St. John's down to a point about 3.5 kilometres beyond the village of Aquaforte. The total drive was approximately 80 kilometres. When my GPS showed the saved waypoint for N47 W53 at an approximate right angle to the highway, I parked my vehicle and headed out on foot in a westerly direction through the woods. The confluence is actually less than 1.5 kilometres from the highway (as the crow flies) but the trek is probably a little longer than that.

On the first part of the hike, I followed an old ATV trail to a point just north of Black Gully Pond (as shown on the topographical map for this area) and then headed in a southwesterly direction skirting around the pond and on to the confluence. It wasn't a difficult walk but waterproof footwear is a necessity. The area consists mostly of low growth spruce trees and bog lands. The temperature was perfect 9 degrees Celsius under sunny skies. It was a great day for a trek in the woods. After capturing the area with the required photos, I returned to my vehicle and drove back up north visiting some of the small coastline villages along the way.
