07-Aug-2005 -- I revisited this confluence, 6 km from my summer-house, to get some backpack training before I go to Jämtland for a 10-day mountain hiking tour. I took the Tavelsjöleden trail from where it crosses the road between Långviksvallen and Brattby. The first 2 km is on a tractor road almost to the little lake Stor-Tavelsjön (Stor means Great). There I found a little shed for resting. The trail divided, I took the branch to the west of the lake and continued one further km. The trail seems to go 250 m west of the confluence, but I left it at a distance of 335 m from the confluence. I crossed a small rocky hill, a swamp, 3 deep ditches and arrived into the young forest that’s surrounds the confluence. It started to rain heavily, and I had to wait a quarter of an hour to take the confluence pictures. Two blue tape ribbons were hanging very close to the exact point. I think they were put there by the first visitor. Actually, the longer one now appeared to be north of the conflucence, but last time I got it on the picture directed south.
Tavelsjöleden is a walking trail starting near Umeå. It ends at Långforsen rapids in the National River Vindelälven after about 30 km. There are no cabins for overnight stays. It goes mostly through pine forest. At Tavelsjö, there are some mountains that reach 280 m elevation about 1.5 km north of the confluence. The face towards lake Tavelsjö (which is much bigger than Stor-Tavelsjön) is steep due to a fault.
Tavelsjöleden is marked with a small sign depicting the Tavelsjö Sea Monster, something like the Loch Ness Monster. In August the Goldeneye (a duck) females take care of several other females’ ducklings, all swimming in a row. This is the real Tavelsjö Sea Monster.
