06-Sep-2005 -- Continued from 56N 5W,. I arrived in Ballater (from 56N5W) at about 4pm and so had time for a recce in the evening. I drove along the road to Spittal of Glenmuick and discovered a convenient parking place about 500m before a marked path on the map near a farm so I decided to return there the next morning.
However, this did not prove to be a fruitful spot as I'd walked about 750m up the track to where the farm house was marked to be greeted with a barred gate and a sign saying "Keep Out Dangerous Stags". This later proved not to be quite true as I didn't see a single mammal let alone person for the rest of the day, although there was evidence that stag hunting might take place. So I made my way back to the road and walked for another 1km up the valley to where a track was marked on the map, and walked up it up the hill to where it met the previous track. There eventually followed the inevitable walk through boggy heather for the last 1km but I eventually got to the spot.
The view south west was the most interesting and showed the Lochnagar range and the old road along which I walked in the background. North, East, South and West complete the set. Pic 6 shows the GPS.
I retraced my steps back to the car rather than negotiate the initial barred gate which meant a dreary 1.5 km back along the road to the car. It would have been much easier if I had utilised a parking spot by the Allt Dowrie.
