24-Jun-2006 -- After successfully reacing 15N 75E in the morning today, we drove north of Hubli towards the town of Saundatti. After a bumpy few kilometers, we reached a decent road at the town of Aminbhavi. We skirted a huge reservoir after Saundatti and headed towards Manoli and then on to Yargatti. Google Earth and the GPS pointed to the confluence being about 3 kilometers from Yargatti. Thick rain clouds were rolling in when we reached a point that was 600 meters from the confluence.
We parked at the side of the road and started a trek to the point. Google Earth photos of the area showed a barren rocky Mars-like landscape with a few undulations. The real thing looked very different. There was thick undergrowth and spiny trees all along the path.
We reached 16N 75E at around 1530 and after taking the customary photos, backtracked to the car.
Both 15N 75E and 16N 75E turned out to be easy and we happily headed back to Hubli to celebrate.
We believe this point is the 100th confluence reached in India!
On a more personal note, we dedicate this visit to the memory of our friend Devendranath (Nath) who tragically passed away in a road accident last year. Nath was a regular team member and was a source of motivation to all of us.
