14-Jun-2006 -- This was the second of three confluences we visited on our way from home in the Washington DC area to a square dance weekend in Cleveland. 41N 81W is about 20 miles west of the Ohio/Pennsylvania border and about 10 miles south of I-76. Although we never saw it, it is only a quarter mile from the quite large Berlin Reservoir. The confluence is just a few yards north of Leffingwell Road just inside a small (as pastures go) fenced pasture just west of Willie Kirkbride’s farmhouse (photo #1 to the east). We stopped on the north side of Leffingwell Rd. near an oil well only a few yards from the confluence (photo #2 to the west). As I was surveying the situation and determining that the zero point was just on the other side of the fence enclosing the pasture (photo #3 to the south), a large (very large) John Deere tractor was leaving the farmyard a quarter mile away. It stopped; its driver must have been watching to see what I was doing. He waited as I walked down the road to talk to him. I visited with the elderly Mr. Kirkbride (whom I recognized from the picture in Matt Walcoff’s report from over 6 years ago) for several minutes. He remembered the earlier visit and cheerfully gave me permission to hop the fence if I needed to. He didn’t remember that visitor needing to do so. (I don’t believe Mr. Walcoff actually reached zero and furthermore his visit was prior to SA being turned off so a point outside the fence was well within the accuracy of the time.) I walked back to the oil well as Mr. Kirkbride turned east and drove his green machine out of sight. I quickly stepped over the fence to record all zeros on my GPSr (photo #5) and then back to the overgrown access road approaching the well (photo #4 to the south), from where I recorded the requisite photos in the four compass directions mentioned above.
