#1: Confluence Site

(visited by Roland Wirth)

07-Aug-2006 -- After a wonderful dinner at Girabaldi Lake campground while on a family reunion campout, I was delighted to discover that this confluence was less than five miles away as the crow flies. Not knowing if the confluence had been recorded yet I could hardly resist.... Very helpful campground rangers informed me of a trail that went in that direction (along Helm Creek) and I decided to rise early the next morning in hopes of seeing some wildlife along the way.

A well tread trail carried me past turquoise lakes and through mountain meadows gushing with colorful wildflowers still holding the morning's dew. Great views of the Black Tusk, numerous camp robbers (Gray Jays) and several marmots entertained me as I made my way toward the confluence. The trail took me to Helm Creek campground which, much to my surprise, lay only 0.25 miles from my objective. After 2 easy stream crossings and running across some fresh bear sign I found the confluence in a little alcove adjoining a large meadow.... A great hike recommended to all folks visiting this area. Likely one of the easier confluences to visit in a wilderness environment. Roughly 12 miles round trip.

Once back to the world of internet, I discovered that the site had already been recorded. Realizing that the previous visitor did so under very different conditions and from the opporsite direction, I thought it would be valuable to record this quite different experience in visiting this confluence.
