20-May-2000 -- The confluence of 43°N and 76°W is located only about 12 miles (as the birds fly) from my home so it was not much of a trip for my visit on 20 May 2000. I reached the confluence shortly after noon on a drizzly, overcast and cool (even for May in central New York) Saturday. Fortunately, the drizzle stopped by the time I reached the area in which I would have to park the car and start my short trek to the actual location.

I knew from my mapping software that the confluence was less than 650 feet west of Troop K Road, but was quite surprised, and pleased, to find that at the spot where I would need to park the car, there was a large clearing used for dumping brush and grass clippings from the golf course across the road and discarded Christmas trees from neighborhood homes. Naturally, I took advantage of this "parking lot" which enabled me to get the car to only 500 feet from my destination. I then started my short climb up a gradual slope through a typical central New York deciduous maple/beech forest to the confluence. With the help of my GPS receiver I had no problem zeroing in on the location, just a couple of feet east of a large fallen tree. Everything went smoothly and without major incident -- the drizzle had stopped, the satellites were cooperating and the woods was not too wet or thick with underbrush, although I did manage to stumble over some fallen branches a couple of times.

As mentioned above, the confluence is located in a wooded area on a gradual, east facing slope, about 650 feet west of Troop K Road. There is a golf course located across the road and the club house is adjacent to the wooded area, about 2/10 of a mile north of the confluence. I didn't see a soul playing golf, but the club house parking lot sure was packed!!!! The confluence is located 1.2 miles almost due west from the center of the village of Manlius, Onondaga County, New York. Manlius is an historic village, dating from the mid 1700's, about 10 miles southeast of Syracuse. Most of the surrounding area is residential, with a few small dairy farms to the south and west, and scattered areas of woodland.

The two photos of the woods pretty much describe the view in all directions: a tranquil wooded area. The altitude shown on the GPS (see picture #3) of 654 feet is about 50 feet too high, according to the USGS topo map of the area.
