04-Feb-2007 -- Our group traveled north from Boston, planning to visit three confluences sitting on longitude 71W. This visit describes the second destination @ 44N. We approached from the west on route 302 as the sun was going down. The confluence is close to the highway, near the Maine-New Hampshire border.

Aerial photos and older DCP reports suggested that we would likely be intruding on private property. We forgot to bring the "letter of introduction", so decided on a clandestine approach from the west.

An unused access road took us from route 302 into a forest of hardwoods, pine, and hemlock. There was approx 6 inches of snow, the temp was about 0 F, and the skies were clear. The trail ended, and we were forced to bushwhack our way into a wetland gully. Fortunately, everything was frozen. the confluence occurred as we were climbing a fairly steep slope to the east, out of the gully. We were still in the forest, and it was difficult to get the GPS zeroed. At the top of the slope was a metal outbuilding, beyond which a barking dog signalled discovery of our trespass.

we quickly took our photos, and made a rapid retreat, successfully avoiding any potential adverse encounters.
