06-Jul-2007 -- This should be an easy visit. I stayed in Kronstad Camping 6 km East of Alta. I just had to get to Melsvik, about 30 km to the West of Alta.
From Melsvik on the main road, E6, it was just over two kilometers to the confluence point. An unpaved road led to a gravel pit a few hundred meters from E6. From there we had to climb. The weather was good. Sunny and temperatures around 20 centigrades.
The first few hundred meters took us through a birch forest which gradually changed into a thicket. The climb was more cumbersome than expected, i.e. the heat and the enormous numbers of small flies, mosquitoes, gnats and horseflies saw to that.
Having climbed upwards about 300 meters the terrain changed to scrubs and heather. But the insects stayed with us almost all the way to the confluence point which according to the GPS was 469 meters above sea level(our starting point was about 20 - 30 meters above sea level). One bothersome horsefly even insisted on sitting on the GPS.
The climb to confluence point took us about 90 minutes. Back to the car took half that time. Strangely enough there were more insects surrounding us when we went down. Back in the car we combed out a lot of insects from hair and beard....
This visit it probably better to undertake during winter with no insects
