After yet another hectic weekend of moving three students back to college my wife and I were finally on our way back home. Less than 24 hours earlier I had visited CP N41 W89. This little adventure was well planned or so I thought. Had no trouble finding or navigating from exit 69 to on I-39 toward Necedah, WI and to Castle Rock lake. Well the area after looking at Mapquest aerial view sure looked different. The area sure has changed a LOT from the previous visit in 2001.
There is a boat landing and according to the maps I was looking at there was another way to get closer. I didn’t see the turn and when the GPS started showing an increase in the distance to the CP I stopped and went back to the boat landing.
Oh well 300+ meters or about .18 miles isn’t too bad. I’ve hiked through woods for geocaches further than that. I only wish I had remembered at this point to carry a bottle of water. I then headed due south but soon found myself
zigging and zagging around the thick brush and eventually opting to head for the tree line of pines to the east where the walking was a little easier but only barley. There are no open spaces now there are many 6-10 foot tall pines every where. In fact my first photo shows one. It appears that it also marks ground zero for the CP. As seen in the photos it is the same all around. Each of the four directions show very similar growth. I had to squeeze backwards in to the trunk of the tree to get the GPS picture of all zeros. Walking around the tree I could not get what I wanted so I found the best and backed into the perfect spot.
Aaah! The sweet spot where the magic is.
Now as Paul Harvey says “An NOW the rest of the story.”
Just around the next curve and about a third of a mile away I spot a road going due WEST Toward the CP. The entrance to the road is at N43:59.967 by W89:59.719 if future visitors want to know. From there it is about 400 meters (1/4 mile) to the closest point. It was marked Private road and I went down it looking for someone to ask permission of. There are several houses along the road but I didn’t see anyone. Final distance less than 60 meters North. Just my kind of luck.
Was seriously considering asking permission to post this as two distinct visits. I mean that I did a completed visit from the second location. Two visits on the same day at the same general time from two locations by the same person is asking too much. I have all the pictures for a second complete visit but I think I’ll just post a few more pictures than normally allowed showing the road and the GPS.
Spent over an hour and a half doing this TWICE and a local geocache and it was just after 16:00 CDT. Still had a L-O-N-G way to go to get back to Minneapolis. An I had promised my wife a real sit down lunch instead of the fast food we had all eaten for the past three days. So a stop at a local restaurant close to I-39 and an another ½ hour later….. On the road again. Made it home around 9:30 pm.
Mission Accomplished!
