02-Nov-2007 -- We started driving from Ulaanbaatar on 1 November to visit confluence points N49 E110 and N49 E111 that are located deep in Khan Khentii mountain range. After a safe arrival in Binder soum, the nearest settlement, and after very short rest we started driving to the confluence point N49 E111. One of our cousins who live in this area agreed to accompany and guide us. In order to reach the confluence point we drove straight to the north crossing at least 4 rivers, including Onon river that had thick ice formed on the both sides of river bank. We were lucky because on the next day we were told that one guy got his tractor stuck in Onon river at a different crossing. After reaching Galttai river we drove along the river bank and then turned back to south east using our Garmin Vista. First we used an abandoned track probably made by timber loggers and around 10 kms east north east of the point we left that track and started driving toward the point time to time using a track left by a single car. Around 5 p.m., after 4 hours of continuous driving, we at last reached the confluence point located at 1206 meters ASL in southern slope of a mountain. The confluence point is located well inside the recently established Onon-Balj protected area. The area around the confluence point is completely deserted and our cousin told us that people do not come here because area is quite unreachable and occasional wild fire can destroy everything.
