#1: The confluence point - on a steep, scrubby hillside

(visited by Ross Finlayson)

04-Jun-2008 -- This confluence is located in a beautiful remote region of southern California - the Sierra Madre Mountains, north of Santa Barbara. Fortunately, a dirt road - Sierra Madre Road - passes just 0.1 miles west of the confluence point. To reach this road, I took CA highway 166 east from US highway 101 - just north of Santa Maria. Sierra Madre Road starts at [35.11156,-120.09104]. Driving south, I climbed 3300 feet in about 10 miles. That was the easy part.

Then came the hard part: Traversing the remaining 0.1 miles to reach the confluence point, which lay down a very steep, chaparral-covered slope. After a lot of difficult scrambling, I was able to get within 5m (+/- a GPS error of 3m) from the confluence point. (Getting "all zeros" at this point would be extremely difficult.) Climbing back up to the road was even more difficult. Overall, the difficulty in traversing that final 0.1 miles (each way) made this one of the most difficult of my many confluence visits!
