07-Jul-2008 -- 7-Jul-2008 -- We are part internet 4wd group “ Lcool” (Land cruiser owners online) Darren McRae and Steve Bennet in an 80 series and Rod Young, James Davis and my self in my 100 had travelled from Melbourne to Mungerannie on the Birdsville track as our meeting point with other members for a 2 week Simpson trip.
After a long 2 days we arrived at Mungerannie mid morning and set up camp. We met the colourful camp owner and publican Phil and talked of our plans to visit the confluence, he gave us an old station track map which made it look very easy and name of the Mungerannie Station manager who we met on the way.
To reach the confluence Darren and I followed the station track on the mud map for about 7 klm then it just faded away at a dam site from this point on it was 25 klm slow cross country drive over sand dunes gibber plains and old creek beds that the water had cut some very deep ruts through, a bit of back and forth and a few changes of direction around some steep drops we descended the final dune on to a large flat featureless plain.
After a rough and challenging journey we had reached the confluence late in the day. After a quick photo session we headed off for the return journey, we travelled due north for about 10 klm to avoid some of dunes and came across a set of dozer tracks heading directly toward the Homestead following these we had a much easier trip back to camp.
We celebrated with a great meal and a few drink in the Mungerannie Hotel and prepared to meet the rest of the group and set out on our Simpson trip in the morning.
