19-Jul-2009 -- Members of the Tweed Valley 4WD Club attempted to visit this confluence in 2008 but were unable to because of water covering the access route. This year the Club was more successful.
Members of the Club who visited the confluence included Kevin Bourke, Chris Frost, Merv and Colleen Greenhalgh, Len and Sherril Parkes, Dougal and Brenda Cumming-Thom and Richard and Di Johnston. We followed station track to within 500 metres of the confluence. The border fence between SA and Qld. runs about 500 metres north of the confluence.
We parked the cars at 140degrees East and were delighted to find a survey post placed in the ground by Augustus Poeppel in 1875 when he surveyed the border. It was still possible to make out portion of the survey mark on the post.
We walked over a sandhill and looked down at the confluence site which was close to Lake Teetatoble which could easily be seen in the distance.
The actual confluence position was on the edge of a small claypan. There was evidence of a previous visit to the site as there was a ring of stones about a metre from the GPS position. We unfurled the Club banner and took many photographs. The return trip to Birdsville was uneventful and we arrived at the Birdsville Pub by 8:30pm just in time for a celebratory drink.
