20-Feb-2010 -- International Confluence Day in the quiet corner of Connecticut at the house on the hill. My first three cp visits of the day took me west along the 43rd parallel from New Hampshire, through Vermont, and into New York. Now to finish my five state project on 42N, I needed to head southeast and as quickly as possible. That meant finding the nearest interstate highway (I-87), and heading south to I-90, then following I-90 east until it becomes the Massachusetts Turnpike. I pass by Springfield MA (home of the Basketball Hall of Fame), then exit on I-84 at Sturbridge, before taking Highway 131 towards Connecticut. As I again approach the 72nd meridian, I am on Highway 169 just north of North Woodstock. On my earlier scout the steep driveway at 42N 72W was covered with snow, but today there is no problem driving to the house up on the hill. After obtaining the owner’s permission, I pull out my GPS and camera to document my fourth cp of the day. I expect to find the zeroes in the driveway in front of the left door of the garage, but for some reason the GPS takes me a few steps west on top of the short retaining wall. To the west, the fast setting sun shows me I am about to run out of daylight, and I still have to get to Massachusetts...
Time since leaving the NY confluence: 3:14:13. Total elapsed time since day's first cp in NH: 10:47:50. 315.6 miles so far by car; and back on the road at 5:08 p.m.
