#1: This 'prominent tree' lies very close to the confluence point

(visited by Ross Finlayson)

10-Sep-2010 -- One of the nice things about the Degree Confluence Project is that it gives you a reason to visit interesting new places. In this case, it gave me an excuse to drive along picturesque California Highway 70 - between Oroville and Quincy - in remote Plumas County. In my more than 30 years living in California, I had yet to visit this region of the state.

This confluence point lies on a gently-sloping hill within a pine forest. In this respect, it is similar to many other confluence points in North America, and - in particular - felt very similar to the nearby California confluence point [38,-120].

Mine was the first recorded visit to this point since Shawn Fleming's visit almost 6 years earlier. The confluence point lies very close to the 'prominent tree' (perhaps a sequoia?) that Shawn noted. It appears that a fire has passed through this area in the time since Shawn's visit.

Being a notoriously late riser, I didn't get to the confluence point until it was almost sunset, which explains the poor quality of the photos.
