14-Jun-2012 -- This is the sixth of eight planned confluences on our expedition along 38 and 39 north. We had an unsuccessful attempt at 39N 111W the day before.

Following a big breakfast at the Tamarisk Restaurant we followed Old US-50 east out of town until the intersection with a dirt road and followed it to another intersection with a double track and then continued until we found a convenient place to park. I would hike the remaining distance to the confluence.

It was an easy hike over gently rising open terrain scattered with rock and low shrubs. The sun was intense. I had to cross two deep washes, detouring from a direct path until I found a suitable place to make my way across. At the confluence I found a small cairn with a geocache maintained by the Utah Dirt Devils. Inside was an orange car and a note placed by djoty stating “great cache Mar 25 2010”.

I placed my Trimble GPS to capture GPS data on top of the existing cairn Picture #8. This picture also shows some of the items carried in my backpack.

Visibility was unrestricted in all directions and I could easily see our Tahoe 2,500 meters away. I used a signal mirror to flash my wife. She replied back over our Garmin Rino’s that she saw me.

There were incredibly colorful views of the escarpment to the north and you could easily see the town of Green River to the west. A small prickly pear cactus was trying to survive in this very arid area (Picture #7).

Picture #10 is a cylindrical panoramic QuickTime Virtual Reality movie taken at the confluence. You can interactively zoom in and out throughout the image when displayed.

After taking my pictures and sending my Spot message, I started back. It took me about 45 minutes to get back to the vehicle. We had spent about 2.5 hours off of Old US-50.

We continued eastbound on I-70 towards our next objective. Our adventure continues at 39N 109W.
