#1: Confluence point

(visited by John Dag Hutchison and Aase Tveitan Hutchison)

18-Aug-2012 -- After staying over night in the charming little town of Florø we continued northwards towards N62E005. It turned out to be a rather zigzag road and one ferry (Isane – Stråheim). We passed Måløy and continued the remaining distance to the western side of the Vågsøy island. On the highest point of the mountain there was a parking spot and a marker which stated that you now was at N62E005. Well, it was not that easy. My GPS showed me that the cp was about 800 m to the south. The weather was grayish, the ground soggy due to recent rain and old marshland. There were several scars of former peat cutting. Climbing up a small hill I came to a very steep decent towards the cp about 500 m down the hill. The difference in elevation was around 250 meters. The hill was very steep indeed. It was covered with low bushes, mainly juniper and grass and soggy moss. It was very hard going and I was very glad I had two sticks to support myself.

When I finally reached the cp (after about an hour) it turned out to be only 122 m above sea level and about 300 m from the shore. Approaching the cp from the sea would definitely have been easier. The cp was only a few meters from the stream which ran down the east-west valley. The stream came from a lake to the east of the confluence point. The north side of the valley where I had climbed down was densely overgrown, but the south side was mainly covered in grass and much easier to navigate. So for my return I went up the valley towards the lake. It was not very steep, but perhaps a bit longer. It took just half an hour.

I saw only a few sea gulls, no eagles. And a frog. But walking up along the stream I noted that somebody had walked in the grass a short time before me. After a while I saw foot prints of a deer. I even saw a grass straw lifting itself out of the wet foot print, a sure sign the deer was not too far ahead. I did not see any deer, but I heard a sound like some barking. When I finally got back to the car my wife happily told me she had just seen a deer!

We continued to the coast, but when we returned to where I had walked to the confluence point the mist or clouds were so dense that we could only see about 30 meters ahead. Weather is changing fast in these areas.
