(visited by Stephen Langman)

16-Aug-2012 -- After spending 3 most enjoyable nights at Maralinga, we were granted special permission to use the very rarely travelled Emu Road, which would take us to within 5 kilometres from this remote Great Victoria Desert Confluence, so there was no way that I would leave this opportunity to visit this remote spot.

Heading north from Maralinga, it was one of the most enjoyable drives that we had undertaken and the desert was in full bloom. Arriving at the nearest point to the Confluence, we set up camp, which was a very quick and easy affair, ground sheet down and out with the swag, and we set off for the 2.2 kilometre walk to the confluence. I stopped many times along the way photographing the wildflowers, and then directly in front of us, there was a large pole, very similar to a tent pole, but much taller. Stopping to inspect it, it was a government marker of some type, so who knows when this was last seen. If we had been 30 metres either side of this marker, we would not have seen it, as the vegetation was heavy in this location.

Arriving at the exact location, it was the usual confluence dance and we soon had those perfect figures on the GPS. With photos in hand, we retraced our tracks back to camp, with the walk only taking just over an hour and a quarter to complete.

The next day we continued further north on out on to the Anne Beadell Highway for even more fun.
