07-Sep-2012 -- This is our first Confluence and with the successful find, we will endeavour to find more on our travels. On a weekend trip to the Drakensberg mountains (that border the province of KZNatal and Lesotho), from Durban, a detour was made to find this confluence.
It was a misty morning, and in a hilly terrain on a gravel road, with plantations interspersed with farm land, and no settlements or villages made us feel we were travelling in the "middle of nowhere". Fortunately we were in a 4x4 Landrover, so were able to drive along trails and stop at the edge of a gum plantation some 40-50 metres from what our GPS indicated as the spot of the Confluence.
A short walk down a gentle hill in amongst the gum trees brought us to a small cairn that marks the 30S 30E spot. However we were able to obtain a 30S 30E reading some 4 metres from the cairn. See the photos.
The view was uninspiring, being gum tress in all four directions, with normal sparse ground vegetation in such forests. But not being in the "concrete jungle" gave us a feeling of exhilaration at being right on this particular spot of significance in the middle of the forest.
