04-Apr-2013 -- This was the first of hopefully many (all!) of Colorado's 31 confluence points. My wife and I left a conference in Boulder headed for a weekend of camping north of Salida, CO along the Arkansas River and turned off of US-285 along the dirt road that others had previously mentioned around 3:30pm. The road was gated and locked about a mile in. While she napped in the sunny breeze I put on running gear and made my way jogging to the site. Passed some loggers cleaning heavy machinery at the very beginning. Only snag I hit was a wrong turn here; others had previously been very adamant about bearing right, but this now appears to be the main logging road and is currently mislabeled as FS Trail 168. Should have taken the left here instead. Realized I was too far northeast and so bore back through sparse forest following the GPS heading alone; was able to use an elk trail for most of it.

The site indeed had a cairn and a sealed metal box placed by the Utah Association of Geocachers. Sunny, 60 degrees F, and snowy 14ers all around on the horizon - the beauty of early spring in Colorado. I signed the log and made my way back to the car, about 15 minutes quicker on the return. Total time off the main road was an hour and a half. Beautiful and inspiring jog to an arbitrary spot in the middle of nowhere. I like to think of it as purposeful wandering.
