13-Aug-2000 -- It is late in the afternoon. I had been indoors all day because of the heat (over 100F) and decided that I had to get out. The confluence is on the north end of Lake Tawakini. I had scouted out a location previously that could get me to within 1 mile. But the walk would generally be through high grass and brush, through a wooded area.

I stopped off in Plano and picked up my brother. Then we took the back roads to I-30 heading east into Greenville. From there we headed south on Hwy. 69. At the Hall Cemetery, Hunt County 3402 sign we turned back west and worked our way to the intersection of county roads 3401 and 3404. We continued down until we were in a parking lot of a Texas Parks and Wildlife management area.

We are approximately 1 mile northeast of the confluence. The sun is out and it is extremely warm. We are dressed for the temperature but not necessarily the terrain. A dirt path leads us to a point nearly due north of the confluence. From here the rate of travel greatly decreased. We tried heading down south along dry creek beds for short stretches and popping back out into woods. We are navigating through knee-high clumps of grass and weeds, when we are not working our way through the young, dense woods.

Finally we are 95 meters (with a 4-meter error potential) from the confluence and it appears to lie in a marsh that currently is fairly dry. However the grass there is chest high and dense. And we stopped. This area is usually under a few inches/feet of water normally, which explains the grassy areas, but also this is snake country. It is a hot day - and if I were a snake I would hang out where it was wet and as cool as it gets. We stopped!

We took pictures of the GPS display - ourselves - and along the way back to the car one of the local inhabitants (spider).
