13-Aug-2014 -- After spending the night in San Estanislao, we drove north toward Concepcion in order to attempt this confluence point. At the villiage of Aguaray we turned west on an excellent road toward San Pedro del Ycuamandiyu. At one point we passed through the village of Nueva Germania (New Germany) where we had to detour around the closed main road. It turned out that for some reason a small airplane had landed on the main road. This road passed within roughly 2 km of the confluence point, and a relatively good dirt road headed north and passed only 750 meters to the east of the confluence. The land around here was relatively lush and consisted of broad flat swampy areas interspersed with hills where people lived and farmed the land.
The troubles began at the point of closest approach. We were reluctant to simply cross fences and trespass since we were unfamiliar Paraguayan culture and norms. After considerable time we were able to converse with one woman who lived in a house somewhat farther from the confluence point. She didn't seem to want us to cross her land, but she seemed willing to help us find a man down the road who could help us. This began a 90 minute series of encounters with local citizens who each had a different idea of what we should do, but none of whom seemed the least bit comfortable with letting us simply wander into the fields. I believe part of the trouble was that the men of this region were all elsewhere and the older kids were all off at school. The men that we did encounter somewhat further away from the confluence point were all busy and/or simply seemed confounded by our stated purpose.
