08-Sep-2014 -- This is the last out of 5 reports reaching confluence points in Central Finland. The story starts from 65°N 26°E. The previous report is 66°N 25°E.
In the early morning I started cycling from Tervola (160 km north of this CP). I actually didn't plan to visit this Confluence, since I had to catch a plane in the afternoon. However, when I got to the town of Kemi, a train was about to leave for Oulu. I spontaneously decided to hop in the train and one second later the train departed. One hour later, at 8:45 AM, I was already in Oulu – enough time to spend a good fraction of the day with anything I like. And since I like visiting or even attempting confluence points, I thought that I could give this one a try. I didn’t have any expectation to reach the Confluence, since it is located in the sea about 3.5 km from the shore.
I cycled about 30 km to the end of the road 816, where a car ferry takes passengers to the island Hailuoto. I had 30 minutes time before the ferry left. So I went to a little harbour where a fisherman was sorting his nets. I tried to convince him to make a little joyride to the Confluence in 10 km distance. But he didn't speak any English. Although I showed him the map and tried to explain the project without words, he wasn't convinced and he obviously had better things to do than finding virtual points. So I went back to the ferry terminal in order to get on Hailuoto Island, where the nearest point on land to the Confluence is located.
The ferry took half an hour. At 11:30 AM I was on Hailuoto (6 km distance). I cycled to the nearest coast at a distance of 3.55 km. Surely, there was no chance to visit the Confluence, since there was no harbour or even a boat nearby. This nearest point turned out to be very unpleasant. I didn't see any mosquito on the whole vacation, but suddenly, while taking these pictures, they attacked me. In my selfie you can see the mosquitoes around me.
After cruising around on the island a bit, I took the 2 PM ferry back to the mainland and reached the airport in time. Only when I got home to Zurich, I unpacked a destroyed bicycle. Unfortunately, the airlines nowadays are only liable for the case, not for the content. In my case the cardboard box was the case and the bicycle the content.
