11-Apr-2015 -- My wife and I decided it was time to take a Bolder and Fresher trip to Albuquerque for the weekend and it would be a great opportunity to visit a couple confluences along the way.
This confluence was last visited almost 10 years ago. In Fort Thomas, we turned west off Highway 70 and onto Black Rock Road here and then continued west onto the dirt Black Rock road here and then south onto a smaller dirt track here and continued across a small wash and beyond until we parked just over 500 meters north of the confluence.
It’s pretty cool that you can now link to free Google Street View images! Click on the first two links above to see what I mean. I remember when linking to TerraServer images in narratives 10 years ago was cool and useful – now TerraServer charges outrageous prices for publically available data!
I set out on foot and navigated over hard sandy ground and through some small washes to a large circular field approximately 580 meters in diameter surrounded by a barbed wire fence. The confluence itself was easily found about 25 meters south of the northern edge of this field on very flat ground.
I did my standard data collection routine – data logging with TerraSync, taking lots of pictures, and sending a Spot message before I headed back.
Post processing of the GPS data reveals that my GPS receiver was 2.3 meters southwest of the actual confluence with a Horizontal Precision of 1.9 meters. From where we parked, my total round trip hike time was 32 minutes and 1.2 km. It was 1 hour total with 12 km of driving from Highway 70 in Fort Thomas.
