07-May-2016 -- Fue durante una cena con mis amigos que recordé las aventuras de las confluencias en nuestro país Venezuela. De hecho, recuerdo que tenía planeado visitar algunos de estos “puntos exactos” durante mi estadía en Arabia Saudita y continuar con la tradición de la Cacería de Confluencias. Sería una buena forma de ver más de este hermoso país y tomar ventaja de muestra estadía en esta parte del mundo Árabe. Así que llego el momento de planificar esta aventura y mis amigos estuvieron de acuerdo en participar.

En nuestra búsqueda por una confluencia cerca de Rābiġ encontramos la 23N 39E. Buscando la mejor forma de llegar hasta ella encontramos que esta se encuentra al lado de la autopista N5 que va hacia Yanbu` desde Rābiġ.

Algún tiempo atrás uno de nuestros amigos nos conto acerca de un antiguo asentamiento, algo así como las ruinas de un antiguo fuerte cerca de la autopista N5 en los alrededores de Rābiġ. Una vez intento visitarlo pero no puede acercarse lo suficiente por lo difícil del terreno pudiendo solo visualizarlo a lo lejos. De acuerdo a sus indicaciones, este antiguo asentamiento estaba ubicado dentro del área de la confluencia.

Así que incluimos esta nueva atracción en el plan e intentamos encontrar alguna información en la Internet pero no había nada relacionado a un antiguo asentamiento cerca del área de la confluencia; sin embargo, en una búsqueda adicional encontramos que había otro Fuerte antiguo no muy lejos del punto de la confluencia.

En una mañana de un Sábado muy temprano iniciamos nuestro plan intentando evitar un poco del calor del mes de Mayo y del verano de Arabia Saudita. Primero nos dirigimos al antiguo Fuerte que encontramos en la Internet. De acuerdo a la información disponible este Fuerte fue del periodo del Imperio Ottoman. Las coordenadas para este interesante punto son 22º44'22.8"N 39º08'14.1"E. A pesar de que esta información está disponible en Internet no es fácil encontrarlo; tomamos la calle King Salman hacia Muġīniyya; pasando la autopista N5 (salida 927) hay una entrada a una vía de tierra paralela a la autopista N5 que ha estado siendo usada para la instalación de una gran tubería.

Nos dirigimos hacia el sur en este camino de tierra siguiendo el GPS con las coordenadas del Fuerte, calentando para la cacería de la confluencia. En algún punto, el Fuerte estaba a nuestra izquierda así que nos salimos del camino de tierra para acercarnos a él. Luego de pasar una cerca que aún no estaba completada notamos el asentamiento a la distancia por su lado Oeste. A medida que nos acercábamos nos percatamos de que el Fuerte está rodeado por una cerca que tenía la puerta abierta pero con un letrero indicando que el acceso no estaba permitido por tratarse de una ubicación arqueológica. De alguna manera fue frustrante el no poder acercarnos lo suficiente pero al mismo tiempo esperamos que esto pueda preservar el Fuerte para el futuro.

Luego de explorar el área cerca del Fuerte encontramos que su lado Este es la parte más completa del asentamiento. Es impresionantemente alto y ancho. Fue nuestra compensación por no haber podido entrar dentro del Fuerte.

Una vez que tomamos nuestros registros fotográficos y algunas bebidas refrescantes nos dirigimos de regreso hacia la autopista N5 hacia Yanbu` para cazar a nuestra confluencia, regresando por el mismo camino de tierra que nos llevó al Fuerte.

El GPS mostraba que la confluencia estaba en el lado Este de la autopista N5 alrededor de 30 Km hacia el Norte. Había una larga cerca a lo largo del camino al lado de la autopista y a medida que avanzábamos no encontramos una entrada. Llegamos al punto en el que la confluencia estaba a nuestra mano derecha pero aún no había entrada.

Luego de dejar la confluencia detrás de nosotros encontramos la salida 973 que nos permitió pasar hacia el lado Este de la autopista N5. Solo había algunos metros de asfalto al pasar la salida 973 para luego llegar a un campo abierto con muchas marcas de cauchos dejadas en la arena.

A una larga distancia había torres de transmisión eléctrica alineadas más o menos en paralelo a la autopista N5. Nuestro GPS mostraba el punto de confluencia a unos 3 km hacia el Sur/Este de nuestra ubicación hacia las torres de transmisión eléctrica pero veíamos unas altas colinas en frente a la dirección de la 23N 39E. De todos modos, procedimos a seguir las huellas de cauchos en el campo abierto y las indicaciones del GPS llegando a un punto donde la confluencia se encontraba a unos 1,5Km aproximadamente, pero detrás de las altas colinas a las cuales ya habíamos llegado; nos desplazamos alrededor tratando de encontrar un camino para pasarlas; el terrero era de tierra muy suelta y con muchas rocas. De alguna manera notamos un camino que estaba al lado de las torres de transmisión eléctricas y que ascendía para pasar las colinas. También había la instalación de una tubería realizándose en esta área.

Tomamos esta ruta de arena y rocas no tan difícil para nuestros vehículos y la distancia hacia la confluencia se hacía cada vez menor. A 800 metros de ella, nuestro GPS indico su ubicación hacia la derecha perpendicularmente al camino de tierra; entonces estacionamos nuestros vehículos y empezamos a caminar entre muchas piedras de color negro y de diferentes tamaños siguiendo el GPS; la temperatura estaba en 42 grados centígrados de acuerdo al indicador del carro; el calor estaba intenso pero afortunadamente el sol no estaba tan fuerte. A los 10 metros la danza de confluencia se inició moviéndonos de un lado al otro buscando el punto exacto. Finalmente lo logramos…! Llegamos a la confluencia 23N 39E…! Tomamos nuestros registros fotográficos incluyendo la prueba del GPS.

A pesar de que pueda que no haya mucho sentido el llegar a un punto donde no hay nada del todo, el logro de alcanzar esta marca junto con toda la aventura de la caza de la confluencia pasando por lugares desconocidos es lo que hace que estas búsquedas sean de valor para compartirlas con amigos. También, lo que se encuentra, se ve y se descubre en el camino en un recuerdo adicional que enriquece la experiencia. Todos pasamos un gran rato en este primer baile de la confluencia y estoy seguro de que será el inicio de muchas más por venir.

07-May-2016 -- It was during one dinner with my friends that I recall about the confluence adventures back in our country Venezuela. Actually, I remember that I was planning to visit some of these “exact points” during my stay in Saudi Arabia and continue with the tradition of Confluence Hunting. It may be a good way to see more of this beautiful country and to take the advantage of our stay in this part of the Arab world. So, the time has come to plan the quest and my friends agree to get on board.

In our research for a confluence close to Rābiġ we found 23N 39E. By checking on the best way to approach this one, we found that it was aside the highway N5 that heads to Yanbu` from Rābiġ.

Some time before, one of our friends told us about an old settlement, like the ruins of an old fort close to the highway N5 around Rābiġ. He tried one time to visit it but he was not able to approach it good enough due to the difficulty of the terrain that just let him see it from a far distance. According to his indications, this old settlement was located in the confluence area.

So, we include this new feature in the plan and we try to find some information on the web but there was nothing related to an old settlement near the confluence area; however, on an additional research we found that another ancient fort was not too far from the confluence point.

On a very early Saturday morning, we initiate our plan trying to avoid some of the heat of the month of May and the summer of Saudi Arabia. First we head to the old fort that we found on the web. According to the available information, this fort was from the Ottoman Empire period. The coordinates for this interesting point are 22º44'22.8"N 39º08'14.1"E. Although this information is available on the web, it is not easy to find it; we took King Salman Road toward Muġīniyya; crossing highway N5 (exit 927) there is an entrance to a sand road parallel to the highway N5 that has been used for the installation of a huge pipe.

We head south on this sand road following the GPS with the fort's coordinates, just warming up for the confluence hunting. At some point, the fort was on our left so we got off the sand road to approach it. After passing an incomplete fence, we notice the settlement from the distance on its west side. When getting close enough we find that the fort is surrounded by a fence with an open entrance but with an indication that trespassing is not allowed by being an archeology location. Somehow it was frustrating not being able to get closer, but at the same time we hope that this can preserve the fort for the future.

After exploring the area near the fort, we find that its east side is the most completed part of the settlement. It’s impressively high and wide. It was like our compensation for not being able to get into the fort.

Once we have taken our photographic records and some refreshment, we head back to the highway N5 up to Yanbu` to hunt for our confluence, returning by the same sand road that lead us to the fort.

The GPS shows that the confluence is at the east side of the highway N5 around 30 km up north. There was a large fence all the way aside the highway and as more that we move forward, an entrance was not found. We reach the point when the Confluence was just on our right hand but still no entrance. As the Confluence was left behind we found exit 973 that allows us to pass to the east side of the highway N5. There were only some meters of asphalt road after passing through exit 973 to just enter into an open field with many tire tracks left on the sand.

Up to a far distance, there were transmission power towers aligned more or less to the highway N5. Our GPS shows the confluence point around 3 km to the South/East of our location towards the transmission power towers but we were facing high hills in front in the direction of 23N 39E. Anyhow, we proceed following the tire tracks on the open field and the indications of the GPS reach one point where the confluence was at 1.5 km approximately, but behind the high hills that we already reached; we circle around trying to find a way to pass them; the terrain was of very loose sand and with many rocks. Somehow, we notice a path that was next to the transmission power towers and that ascended to pass the hills. In addition, there was an installation of a pipe taking place in that area.

We took this path of sand and rocks but it was not so difficult for our vehicles and the confluence point distance was getting closer. At 800 meters from it, it was pointed out by the GPS to our right hand perpendicular to the sand road, so we park and begin to walk among many black rocks of different sizes following the GPS. The temperature was 42 degrees Celsius according to the car indicator; the heat was intense but fortunately, the sun was not so strong. At 10 meter, the confluence dance was just started by moving us around looking for the exact point. We finally made it…! We reached the confluence 23N 39E…! We took our photographic records including the GPS proof.

Although it may not have too much sense to arrive to a point where there is nothing at all, the accomplishment to reach this mark along with all the adventure of the confluence-hunting passing through unknown places is what makes these quests worth to share with friends. Also, what you find, see, and discover on the way is an additional souvenir to enrich the experience. We all had a great time on this first confluence dance and I am sure it will be the beginning of many more to come.
