04-Sep-2000 -- When I first found The Degree
Confluence Project web site I thought this would be a great excuse to
get out and explore some of the countryside. I was planning a trip to
Cincinnati for my Mom's 85th birthday and to visit relatives. There was
an unvisited confluence about 30 miles southwest from there (N39 W85)
and I thought it would make a great country drive. Well, before my trip
somebody else beat me to it. But we decided it would still make a nice
trip anyway.
On September 4th, my three sisters, my mom and I all headed out to
explore. We arrived in Aurora, IN about lunchtime and found a very
scenic restaurant, the Applewood Inn. It is located right next to the
Ohio River and has a dining patio overlooking the river. After lunch we
explored Aurora for a while. There are several Victorian style homes on
hills with fantastic views of the river and the surrounding area. There
was even an art gallery with the expected name of Aurora Borealis.
The drive to the confluence took us west from Aurora to Hueseman
Drive. This narrow road winds its way through the woods and down the
hills to a farm house with open fields. We knocked on the door to ask
permission to wander around and take pictures. The owner commented,
"Don't tell me you're here about that 39 parallel thing. You're all
crazy." He then warned us, "Be careful of the 'lectric
fence. It'll light ya up if ya touch it." He was nice enough
though to turn it off.
We walked up the hill to the pond area and around to the back side.
>From the earlier report and from the aerial photo, the confluence should
be on that side. We managed to get within several feet, as did the
previous visitor, and decided the poison ivy was not worth a closer
approach. Since this was a second visit to this confluence, we only
took a few pictures of ourselves to document our visit. We then
retreated to the van and the drive home. We all had an enjoyable time
in a part of Indiana we most probably would not have visited
otherwise.
