23-Aug-2020 -- A family holiday in Cinque Terra booked in February before the Covid-19 pandemic brings us to Italy. It was very much 'hit and miss' as to whether we we're actually going to be able to go until the final week beforehand. Anyway, the 'TeamSharpe 2020 holiday' is on and it wouldn't be complete without bagging ourselves a new Confluence Point!!! ....44°N 11°E. After 4 days of setting the alarm clock and early starts we had a lie in and a relaxed breakfast before setting off on the 1hr 15mins drive from Vezzano Ligure Nr. La Spezia. We drove to the area via the E80, A11, and SP24 and then turned off sharp left into a rough climbing track just before the SP24 zigzags North/South to approach the spot from the Southwest. Looking at Rainer Mautz's story I now think he approached from the East which would have been the better option as we hiked 1.5km up the steep wooded track as it wasn't suitable for anything other than a 4x4. With the ever faithful Dawn in tow along with my 2 daughters Sophie 9 & Natasha 6 we made our hot and sweaty way towards the area whilst under constant attack from large Horsefly type fly's which were out in abundance. The track climbs up and eventually reaches a large clearing in the forest on a steep hillside made up mainly of Bracken and grasses and the Confluence Point is in the left-hand uppermost corner. The walk there took approximately an hour and was hard work in the blistering heat. Going up the track there were lizards everywhere darting about amongst the leaf litter and we also spotted a Snake. Also in the final push up the hillside we nearly walked through a huge web with very Scary looking Spider in half way through eating a Grasshopper. Anyway we made it, the trip was a success and we all enjoyed our mini adventure. |
